Video: Wirewinders from SOTABEAMS

I have spent years searching for the ideal way of winding up antenna wire for use in the field. These special winders are just about perfect! Lightweight and with an elastic fastener to secure the wire, they are quick and easy to use.

Wire winders ensure tangle-free aerials and rapid deployment - perfect! Great for SOTA, caravanning and DXpeditions!

Use a figure-of-eight winding technique which helps to ensure no kinks in the wire.

We recommend three winders for a dipole fed with RG174 (one for each half of the dipole and one for the co-ax and back guy). Two winders are usually adequate for a dipole fed with RG58 (cable coiled separately).

Each winder weighs 1.25 oz (36g). Length 24.5 cm (9.75 inches).

Recommended Accessory

If you are making antennas using our Wirewinders, consider investing in one of our rugged antenna bags - designed for use with Wirewinders.

    Wire winders

These little guys really work very nicely and help avoid the tangles that e.g. radial wires or long wire antennas can cause ... well, maybe you don’t get tangles, but I used to! No longer. Simple but very, very effective.

    Wire Winder

Great example of repurposing a product made for a different purpose. Richard’s video demonstration convinced me to try one so I bought three (one was a midi). The winders best feature is the unwinding, really slick and quick. This is especially great for endfed antennas or radials. Watch the video, you’ll want a couple too !

    Antenna Wire Winders

I have found that these particular wire winders have a very interesting effect on the wire or guy cords. Namely that there is now or at least far less tendency for the wire or cord to take on a birds nest appearance when unwinding to deploy. This means that you have a faster deployment, also the unwinding can be done one handed, just by using two fingers (Thumb and For Finger) in the handle hole and allowing the winder to pitch from one side to the other to unwind. Because the wound wire does not have a coiled set there is no tendency to birds nest, and kink as it comes off the winder. The shock cord is very helpful once the wire has been carefully rewound in a figure of eight (NOT CIRCULAR as on a drum) this does need a little more focus to ensure that each turn in correct - but the effort is very worth while, and the shock cord can hold not only the wire or cord but also the UNUN or BALUN on the winder as well (Depending on the size of course). The little finger loops at either side are useful to locate the start end of the wire. and if done correctly at the start end the deployed wire should end up at the Mast ready for elevating to full height, so this end the free end is where one should start to re-wind in the winder. I will be purchasing more of these over time. ZL1MX

    Wire Winders

Best wire winders I've found. Maximum flexibility to secure antenna to just about anything, even sticking a corner into seams in my block wall.

Well made and durable. These work well for both wire and support line. Winding in a figure of eight pattern keeps the tangles down.

    Antenna wire winders

I can't get enough of these. I use them for rope/cord, rather than wire. I could cut a bunch out of plywood, but these are so inexpensive and already work so well there is no incentive to do so. Winding cord in a "figure eight" pattern really reduces knots and snags, making deployment of antennas in the field that much quicker. Similarly, packing up at the end of the day is easier when the rope isn't all snarled up. They pack better than round reels, too.

I use them for coax as well as 550 cord. Love them and would recommend them to all I talk with.
