West Tyrone Radio Conference Report

Posted by Richard G3CWI on 7th Oct 2014

The day started early as I had to get up at 04:50 to catch the 07:10 flight to Belfast. Aubrey, GI4TOR met me at Belfast International for the long drive across to Omagh. We arrived in good time to set up. The conference had a few traders and I joined them with a table of SOTABEAMS goodies.

I was the first speaker. After Philip, MI0MSO did the introductions and I spoke on "How to Energise your Radio Club". Naturally I was keen to explain how portable radio operating could serve as a focus for club events.

I was followed by Bobby, MI0RYL who gave us an insight into the CASHOTA Award Programme and well as the Royal Observer Corps programme. These are both potentially enjoyable programmes for those who can't get out into the hills.

After Bobby's talk, the conference venue put on a good choice of meals. I had Bushmills Chicken - tasty. I sat next to the gregarious President of IRTS Seamus, EI8BP which made for entertaining lunch. I hope to go over and give a talk on SOTA at a forthcoming IRTS Conference.

After lunch RSGB President John G3WKL spoke on the role of the RSGB. It was interesting to hear him explain what he felt was the RSGB's remit, particularly in respect of the protection and management of the radio spectrum.

After John's talk, Dave, M0OBW spoke about his role as Quality Manager with the Radio Communications Foundation and in particular about the way in which the examination process works. Inevitably this was slightly controversial and led to a lively debate at the end.

The conference ended with various prize draws and as usual I was unlucky.

I eventually got home around 10pm. A long, but enjoyable, day as a guest of the West Tyrone Amateur Radio Club - thanks for inviting me!

My impression was that it had been a successful event although the attendance was lower than the organisers hoped for. Notwithstanding that, the event served as a good platform for future similar events in Northern Ireland.
