PL259 - RG174 etc. solder centre, crimp braid
A good quality lightweight PL-259 (UHF) plug for RG316 RG174 RG178 LMR100.
Use our 3:1 or 6:2 heatshrink sleeving to seal (either size will work for this plug).
Recommended stripping dimensions in millimetres:
We recommend sliding the heatshrink (if used) and the metal sleeve onto the coax before stripping.
After stripping:
- Use a soldering iron to tin the centre conductor. This will help keep all the strands together when you insert the coax into the plug.
- Insert coax into plug. If you have stripped it correctly, the end of the centre conductor should be aligned with the tip of the plug when the coax is inserted all the way. If it is protruding beyond the tip of the plug, trim the end.
- Slide the sleeve up over the braid to help hold the coax in position, but don't crimp it yet. The braid should cover most of the narrow textured part of the plug but be fully covered by the metal sleeve - if there is some braid poking out the end, trim it.
- Once you are sure that everything is correct and that you do not need to trim anything or re-strip the cable, solder the centre conductor to the tip of the plug.
- Crimp the sleeve over the braid (0.128" hex crimp)
